for seasonal Folk Modern inspiration

Pruning in my garden today I remembered a post by @moss_en_place which reminded me to harvest the seeds from my nasturtium for pickling. It’s feels like a perfect sunny weekend activity 🌞

All packed up to go. I love how flowers look all crowded together.

I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who looks at baby pictures on Mother’s Day. Luc and Colette changed everything… not least of all my sense of self and purpose. Being their Mama is everything ❤️

Petite green plums overhead by the front door… the trick will be trying to harvest them when they’re ripe, but before they make a mess on the front walkway 🙃

Sunday mood - Butter Fried Egg and Waffle Iron Hash Browns 🌞

MAKOVEC - Czech Poppyseed Cake with Lemon Glaze. I’m working through my recipes to submit to Alameda County as part of my cottage bakery license renewal. I will be adding this little lady to my offerings. Back when I was a teenager I went on a tour of the @moss.mansion with my mom, my aunt and my Grandma Vesta. When we got to the kitchen part of the tour the guide told us the glass tile in the kitchen had come from Bohemia. That peaked my grandma’s interest, as that was where her mother was from. She told me her aunt had had many pretty pieces of Bohemian glass dishes, but her mother had none, as with all her kids she was not able to keep nice things… she went on to say she also had difficulty making Bohemian baked goods as it was illegal at the time to import poppyseed grinders to the US, due to the opium trade. It was not that often that my grandma would share stories like that with me, so it stuck. Not in small part due to my love of all things culinary. I resolved I would get myself a poppyseed grinder and make Czech baked goods. I did not get around to that until a few decades later, too late to share that baking with my Grandma, but I would like to think she would enjoy a slice of this little cake.
